Renewable Plastic for NIVEA
21-05-2021
Beiersdorf has announced that their NIVEA Naturally Good face care range will soon be manufactured using a new innovative and environmentally friendly packaging.
The multinational company teamed up with SABIC to work on a project that would result in a packaging design that meets Beiersdorf’s ‘CARE BEYOND SKIN Sustainability Agenda’. This dedication aims to reduce the company’s fossil fuel-based plastic use by 50% up to 2025, as well as bringing down overall packaging CO2 emissions.
There were a number of considerations that had to be met during the development of the NIVEA packaging. One of these was that there could be no compromise on quality, the recyclable material had to maintain the same visual and tactile characteristics that customers have come to expect from the range.
Additionally, Beiersdorf was insistent that the new packaging needed to be in line with the ‘feedstock concept’ and not derived from a food source, which ruled out sugar cane and corn.
SABIC took all this on board and worked with the brand to produce a packaging solution created from Certified Renewable Polypropylene (PP) from their TRUCIRCLETM portfolio. This is a second-generation feedstock, made from a by-product of the forestry industry.
SABIC’s PP packaging met all the requirements that Beiersdorf had, moving away from fossil-based virgin plastic to renewable plastic, which maintained quality whist supporting a circular economy.
The new packaging for the NIVEA Naturally Good skincare range saves 76g of CO2 per jar, a reduction of 60% compared to fossil fuel produced jars.
From start to finish, the project took 9 months and will begin to be rolled out in over 30 countries from June.
