REVOLUTIONARY PLASTIC PRODUCTS
17-02-2020
Plastics have contributed to the innovation of many revolutionary products over the years.
As technology is constantly becoming more and more advanced, we’re always discovering new and alternative ways to use plastic to help us in extraordinary circumstances.
From prosthetic limbs to innovative packaging, this blog explains some of the revolutionary plastic inventions.
Prosthetic Limbs
Prosthetics improve the lives of many amputees and enhance not only their motion ability but also increase their level of comfort.
There are also many cases where these artificial limbs have been created and used for animals like small horses and dogs, plastic can even be used to create artificial paws for dogs.
Using plastics to manufacture a range of prosthetic limbs results in a durable and long-lasting medical product. The variety of plastics involved in fitting these allows for a definitive fit for the patient and helps meet their functional goals.
A recent innovation in the world of plastic prosthetics is the discovery of an affordable alternative made from recycled plastic bottles.
Scientists have ground plastic bottles to produce polyester yarns which can then be heated and moulded to create the plastic sockets for the limbs.
Not only has this proved to be a cheaper solution, but it’s also an extremely sustainable method of reusing plastics. Instead of the usual £5000 associated with the treatment, this new recycled product is said to cost as little as £10.
Other Medical Equipment
In the world of medicine, there are many life-saving pieces of plastic equipment that wouldn’t perform the same job if they were made from other materials. By using heavy-duty plastic to produce our medical tubes, and even MRI machines, they provide a durable and reliable structure to help patients.
Plastic equipment is often transparent so that it is easier for doctors and surgeons to perform procedures and other forms of surgeries with the ability to see what’s going on, along with being a safer and more flexible option compared to glass.
Plastic implants can also allow patients who have severely impaired hearing to gain back their ability to hear again. The device transforms sound impulses into electrical impulses to stimulate the auditory nerve.
Biodegradable Food Packaging
For a decade, creating biodegradable plastic packaging has been in the research and testing stages. Scientists have understood that reducing the amount of plastic waste will dramatically help the environment.
Bio-plastics are sourced from natural plant materials like sugar canes and potato starch. Depending on which natural plant it’s derived from, bio-plastics will biodegrade in the open air and other natural situations like being used for compost.
These plastics are created under high temperatures to shape and mould them into the end product, which can be anything from food packaging to water bottles.
The benefits that come with this discovery is the requirement for much less energy to create them compared to regular plastics and they tend to be just as recyclable.
There are many revolutionary products sourced from plastic materials that create convenience and ease for all of us, and since the plastic revolution continues more and more products are being made from recycled plastics instead of those that are single-use.
