Sit-stand desks are becoming increasingly popular as a healthier alternative to the traditional desk, particularly in Scandinavia where it is now a legal requirement in Denmark for Danish employers to offer their employees access to a sit-stand desk.
According to a 2019 article published in Preventive Medicine Reports, lack of physical movement increases the risk of coronary heart disease, type two diabetes and cancer. Moreover, for every additional hour spent sitting, there is a two percent increased risk of mortality – this may not seem substantial but over an extensive period, this can be a contributing factor.
In another 2019 article published in Ergonomics, sit-stand desks can influence physical activity and subsequently increase energy expenditure, improve cognitive performance (particularly attentiveness and memory) as well as delay the onset of or reduce the intensity of musculoskeletal pain. Furthermore, sit-stand desks may decrease mental fatigue, leading to fewer mistakes being made in the office and a happier and more productive workforce.
