Proud to be keeping future HV experts safe
21-11-2018
We’ve proudly helped a newly constructed high voltage (HV) electrical training facility to keep its trainees safe with our leading electrical test equipment.
PASS Training, the training arm of electrical testing equipment supplier PASS, is a specialist accredited provider of electrical and health and safety courses.
Now the Stockton-based company has launched the state-of-the-art training centre delivering courses which prepare candidates for the dangers of working with complex high voltage systems and equipment.
The new facility has been designed to include mock substations including transformers, marine and land based circuit breakers and switchgear to allow trainees to gain hands-on experience in the field.
Already one of its biggest online UK distributors for electrical testing equipment, PASS approached us to manufacture indicators suitable for a bespoke piece of equipment that could simulate a high voltage scenario at an intrinsically safe 110 volts.
We happily supplied six high voltage KD1E indicators with PH3 proving units, designed to simulate potential issues.
As the centre’s equipment is fully-bespoke, the indicators needed to be modified to work correctly – adding an extra layer of complexity to the project.
Training centre general manager Graham Wilson said: “For safety reasons, our high voltage simulation system is powered at 110v AC rather than 11,000v AC, which would be a usual nominal system voltage.
“As a result of this, the voltage recognition capabilities of standard potential indicators are severely compromised and won’t work correctly. In order to circumvent this problem, we needed to reconfigure the recognition circuitry of a standard 11,000v unit to actuate at 55v to earth.
“Seaward was more than capable of meeting this challenge and all six units supplied are working perfectly.”
Courses on offer at the new facility cover a range of topics – including dielectric strength, primary and secondary injection training and earth electrode testing. Since the centre’s launch, PASS has seen attendees from the marine and offshore industries, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.
