Houston We Have a Problem..
Anyone familiar with the film Apollo 13 will recognise this message. And it’s one that deserves immediate attention, too, responding quickly potentially being the difference between life and death.
But it’s not just Astronauts that make such calls, in fact, many a website, if it had the ability to ‘call’ its owners, would be sending one.
Something like ‘Boss, we have a problem, Google are ignoring us, and no one ever comes to see us’.
For a website, this is about as serious as it gets, after all, if no one is looking at a site, then what’s the point?
True, ‘Brochure Sites’ get all their visits from people who already know about the business, which is fine, but for those sites who want to reach out to all those hundreds (thousands?) of potential customers that DON’T KNOW THAT THE BUSINESS EXISTS, getting ignored by Google is a real issue.
But Why Does Google Ignore a Site?
The fact is that up to 80% of sites on the Internet don’t have any worthwhile rankings on Google, the reason being, putting it simply, that Google does not think the site ‘deserves’ to be listed…
This sounds a bit harsh, and in some instances, there is no doubt that Google has got it wrong. Not that that makes any difference, as they are the judge and jury here.
But What Can Be Done About It?
The good news is that there will be some reasons for the site being overlooked. And once found, actions can be taken that will cause Google to rethink its ‘decision’ and grant those much-needed rankings (ranking that WILL result in visits with all the potential for sales that they bring).
The trick (if that is the word) is to find out what Google does not like, and that is thankfully in 99.9% of cases, very easy indeed.
Fixing the issues may, however, not be so easy, so, if you venture down this path, be ready to invest in time and money.
In some cases, the fix will be simple (all that was missing on one site was internal links), whilst on others, they need extensive work on the links and content.
The Choice is Yours
Basically, any business has a choice. Do they generate their sales through networking etc, using their site as a ‘Brochure’, or do they get their sales by ensuring that their website enjoys a high enough visibility on Google so that it can generate those sales?
If the latter course of action is taken, then basically, the business must commit to doing what is needed to get Google to ‘like’ their site.
