Spring Spruce Up: DIY Projects

As we transition into spring, people all over Britain are thinking about ideas to breathe new life into their living space.

Around three-quarters of Brits tackle their own DIY jobs around the home today, after the number of us feeling confident enough grew during the Covid pandemic, and there are many simple projects we can do without spending a fortune.

DIY was a valuable skill in the mid-20th century, booming in the 1950s as householders did more jobs themselves to beat the post-World War Two austerities. However, as flatpack furniture became increasingly popular towards the end of the century, polls showed only 44% of Brits had learned DIY skills in the 1990s.

The pandemic lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 saw a massive boom in home projects, as we were all spending more time at home. Around 81% of adults completed DIY jobs during this period and the number fell only slightly to 75% after life went back to normal.

The current economic crisis is also leaving householders short of money, so they can make savings by doing simple jobs themselves. Shops are full of DIY products and if it’s a job you can tackle safely, it’s much cheaper than paying a professional.

Spring is a popular time to start because the better weather lifts our spirits and makes us feel more active as we come out of winter’s dark days. There are practical reasons too, as the longer days and prolonged sunshine mean there’s more time to work on projects, especially outdoors.

Homemade bathtub tray

When relaxing in the bath, you may fancy a glass of wine, while watching a film on your mobile or reading a book. This is where a homemade bathtub tray comes in handy.

Start by measuring the width of your bath and then head to the DIY store and ask them to cut you a hardwood shelf of the relevant size. Sand the wood lightly on all sides and then stain it with whatever shade you fancy. You can do this with a paintbrush, or by wearing gloves and dipping a cloth in the tin of stain to smooth it on.

Leave it to dry for 24 hours and then add a handle at each end so you can lift it. Don’t buy screws that are too long!

Drill holes using an electric drill and a countersink drill bit that matches the size of the screws, as this gives a more professional finish.

The bath edge is slippery, so add self-stick gripper pads on the tray’s underside to keep it in place. Buy them from a hardware store or online shop to provide a cushion between the tray and bath’s surface.

It really is that simple to create a useful bathtub tray cheaply and in a very short time.

Painting the front door

Painting your front door is easy but it makes a massive difference.

First, choose a colour by buying a couple of sample pots and painting a small swatch, rather than relying on the colour shown on the paint tin. You can pick up a 30 ml sample pot for a couple of pounds at most DIY stores.

Make sure you’ve chosen an outdoor paint that can withstand the weather, as an interior paint won’t last very long.

If there are any holes, dents or deep scratches in your door, fill them before you start painting and leave it to dry. Then, lightly sand down the whole door’s surface to achieve an even finish - buy good quality paint brushes that don’t shed hairs.

Paint the door evenly: remember, it’s far better to add two or three thin coats over a period of a couple of days, rather than one thick coat, which may streak, bubble or run.

This could also be a good time to replace the handles, bell or door knocker for a completely new look.

Remember, the end result will only be as good as your tools, so have everything you need in a toolbox before you start, as being organised is half the battle. There are various storage products from Solent Plastics’ range that are ideal for DIY projects.
