A Day in the Life of a CAD Engineer
01-09-2016
What is CAD?
The first use of CAD (computer-aided design) software can be traced all the way back to the late 1950s, however it wasn’t until the mid 1970’s that any real advancements in CAD software could be seen. Today it is used by professionals across a variety of industries and niche markets worldwide, including architects, engineers, drafters and artists, to create precision drawings or technical illustrations, and can be used to create two-dimensional drawings (2D) or three-dimensional models (3D).
SSC have offered second-to-none CAD services for over 16 years. Since our inception in the year 2000, we quite like to think that as CAD software and technology has advanced, our knowledge and expertise in the field has blossomed too. We now employ nine CAD Engineers in total, with five at our Hixon site (two for the flatbed lasers and three for the tube lasers), two at our Bristol site (flatbed laser) and two at our Derby site (flatbed laser).
At SSC, we like our CAD customers to be as involved as possible in their project, so we know they are 100% happy and satisfied with the service they receive, right from the very start of the planning process, all the way through to receiving the finished product. The sales and production team work closely with the customers throughout the project, with our savvy salesmen being the main point of contact from start to finish. Even though our customers build a great relationship with the sales team, they don’t usually get to know the experts behind the scenes that make the magic happen. More often than not, those experts come in the form of our CAD Engineers!
CJ’s Career in CAD!
The concept of CAD may seem really simple, but its takes years of practice to master, which is something one of our CAD Engineers, Craig Jones (nickname CJ) knows only too well!
Like a lot of youth, when leaving school CJ wasn’t really sure what he wanted to do, (who does at the tender age of 16?!), so when the opportunity to gain some work experience in the engineering sector became available, he grabbed it with both hands and ran with it. CJ is now qualified in Mechanical Engineering, and has been a CAD Engineer for nine years. He will be celebrating his six year SSC anniversary shortly – in style we hope!
