Sample Collection and Transport
The presence of COVID-19 virus can be detected in throat or nasal swabs as well as saliva samples The detection method uses technologies that detects presence of the virus through its gene or protein expression. For gene expression analysis, the collected samples need to immediately be transferred to a stabilisation/transport solution that will protect the viral RNA for its subsequent use and analysis by qRT-PCR.
Viral DNA/RNA Extraction
COVID-19 viral RNA needs to be extracted and purified from the collected nasopharyngeal swab samples prior to being use in viral detection kits – this procedure requires specialised purification kits that can only be handled by specialised scientists or technicians in dedicated laboratories. The RNA preparation usually takes approximately between 10min and 30min.
