Aquatic respiration can be simply yet accurately measured on intact, live organisms using a variety of Strathkelvin Instruments respirometry systems.
As with all of our respirometry systems, an aquatic system would comprise of an oxygen meter (either 782 or 928), one or more, high precision, 1302 oxygen electrodes (link) and a respiration chamber to house the organism.
The researcher also has a choice of measuring respiration rates via closed or flow-through respirometry. Both closed and flow-through systems utilise the same oxygen meters and 1302 oxygen electrodes, however, the chamber in which the organism is housed will differ.
Both methods have their own advantages relative to one another as discussed in the Closed vs. Flow-Through Respirometry section
For further information regarding the principals of our respirometry systems please see the Biomedical Research Section.
