Magna Enhances Cooling Reliability with Rhoss Chillers and Summit Process Cooling Expertise

In the highly competitive industrial cooling sector, ensuring both accuracy in performance data and reliability of equipment is crucial. Magna, a prominent food and beverage company based in Telford, needed a process cooling solution to support its ongoing business expansion. With a significant project budget and stringent performance requirements, Magna required a trusted partner to deliver a solution that met its high standards.

Magna turned to Summit Process Cooling, renowned for its expertise in designing large-scale process cooling systems. With a strong reputation for delivering high-performance, reliable solutions, Summit Process Cooling was tasked with supplying low GWP R454b Rhoss air-cooled chiller units, pump skids, a large weir tank, and a comprehensive pipework design to integrate seamlessly with Magna’s existing system.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to eliminate single points of failure in a system that had been heavily designed around them. The existing setup featured a single weir tank and a single flow and return feeding the factory pipework header. To mitigate these risks, Summit installed two weir tanks and two pipework feeds to the factory header, removing critical failure points. Given that Magna operates 24/7 and its existing tank was ageing, this issue had become a significant concern.

As part of the upgrade, Summit was also asked to install new, highly efficient Rhoss chiller units with heat recovery capabilities. These units would serve as the primary chillers for Magna’s current and future expansion needs, with the existing chillers transitioning to a secondary support role.

Magna initially had concerns about Rhoss, as it was not a supplier they had worked with before. To address these concerns, Shaun Lancaster, Sales Director for Summit Process Cooling, and Magna representatives visited Rhoss’s Research & Development (R&D) test centre in Italy in June 2024. The purpose of this visit was to validate the manufacturer’s claims, assess the suitability of the chillers for Magna’s facility, and ensure Rhoss was the right choice for their requirements.

The Solution

At the Rhoss R&D test centre, the chillers underwent rigorous testing to verify their performance. Key aspects of the evaluation included:

• Performance Validation – The chillers were tested to confirm they met or exceeded the manufacturer’s advertised performance statistics.
• EUROVENT Certification – Rhoss chillers are EUROVENT certified, meaning they undergo random testing up to six times a year to verify performance claims. Magna's specific chiller data was submitted to EUROVENT, further demonstrating Rhoss’s commitment to transparency and quality assurance.

Rhoss’s live testing under various environmental conditions provided concrete evidence of the chillers’ capabilities, reinforcing trust in the product and addressing Magna’s initial concerns.

Results

The tests conducted at the Rhoss R&D test centre confirmed that the chillers met Magna’s stringent performance specifications. With these results and Rhoss’s EUROVENT certification, Magna felt fully confident in proceeding with the installation.

Summit Process Cooling executed the installation of the chillers, pump skids, and tanks, ensuring a seamless transition into Magna’s facility in Telford.
