Methanol-Free Formaldehyde 16% w/v
10%, 20% and 32% available on request
Premium ultra-pure 16% (w/v) methanol-free formaldehyde from TAAB is used as a fixative for immunohistochemistry, fluorescent immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry assays. It is prepared by us from high quality paraformaldehyde creating a stable yet highly reactive, cell-permeable fixative for reversible amine cross-linking of protein and nucleic acid tissue samples. It is suitable for both electron and light microscopy and easily penetrates large tissue blocks.
It eliminates the step of depolymerisation of paraformaldehyde prior to use. When used in combination with glutaraldehyde, it fixes delicate tissues such as brain in vascular perfusion and It can be used in Karnovsky's fixative in conjunction with your own buffer system. The availability of a high-quality, ampoule-sealed solution of formaldehyde saves valuable time and eliminates the need and hazards associated with preparing the solution directly from paraformaldehyde
Key features of TAAB methanol-free formaldehyde
Fresh - Solution remains stable and free of contamination in the ampoule.
Choice of package sizes - 10 x 2ml and 10x 5ml and 10 x 10ml glass ampoules and 1 litre polyethylene bottles; prevents wastage and minimises disposal difficulties.
Convenient Starting Concentration - 16% w/v formaldehyde solution simplifies dilution to the required working concentration. Also other concentrations on request.
Storage – Conveniently stored at room temperature. Low temperatures encourage the formation of trioxymethylene as a white precipitate which reduces effectiveness.

Glutaraldehyde
EM & Distilled Grades from 8%-70%
Glutaraldehyde is known to be more efficient than other aldehydes in generating thermally and chemically stable crosslinks. TAAB EM grade (G002) for use in electron microscopy has the following additional advantages:
• Actual glutaraldehyde content recorded on each bottle
• Buffered fixatives are stable for 6 months with pH 5 to 6. Base material viable up to 18 months and pH can be easily adjusted for use
• Treatment with barium carbonate unnecessary
• Low buffer requirements
• Excellent fixative and is less inhibitory towards enzymes
TAAB Vacuum distilled grade - purified by vacuum glass distillation to remove all polymerised material – there is no UV absorption at 235nm. It is packed in neutral glass under nitrogen for best results with enzyme histochemistry. Distilled glutaraldehyde, particularly 70% has a high risk of polymerising if it is not stored properly. It is therefore recommended that material is carefully kept at 4ºC or lower without continued defrosting and recapping. This way it can be stable for up to 18 months. Unless it is imperative that material without an absorption of 235nm is required, we strongly recommend the use of TAAB’s very effective EM grade material, eminently suitable for use in cross-linking techniques.
Alcian Blue 8GX Improves preservation of intracellular substances when added to glutaraldehyde.
