The Easy Guide to Stairlift Cleaning
21-09-2021
Stairlifts are a great mobility aid to enable getting up and down the stairs. But, we may forget that they need to be maintained and cleaned to keep them in good working order.
How often should a stairlift be cleaned?
By cleaning your stairlift regularly, every week or so, you eliminate the amount of dust collected on any mechanical components and help extend the life of your stairlift.
Important note: Cleaning should always occur when the stairlift is at the bottom of the stairs to avoid any trips or falls and only if the person is able to do so.
How to clean a stairlift
Stairlifts should be given quick dust with a dry cloth or feather duster to prevent dust from building up; this includes the track, seat and footrest. A slightly damp cloth can be used on the seat and the track to pick up dust instead. But make sure that everything is completely dry afterwards, going over with a dry cloth if necessary. You won't need to lubricate the rail or any parts as this is done on service, by an engineer, only if it is needed.
Do not use any cleaning sprays, bleach or any other abrasive chemical cleaning products. These products may cause severe damages to your equipment, which can result in voiding your warranty. And remember, your lift is an electrical device, so it doesn’t mix well with water!
Keep the area clean and tidy around the stairlift
While vacuuming your floors, don’t forget to clean around the lift area. This includes the carpet, below and rails and behind the stairlift. By doing so, you’ll ensure no dust or hair transfer to the stairlift.

In addition to cleaning your stairlift, we recommend periodic preventative stairlift maintenance to help ensure long-lasting operation.
You wouldn’t neglect your car for more than a year, so be sure that you are working with your local branch for annual “check-ups.” This becomes even more important if you rely on your stairlift to get you up and down the stairs.
