"The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) Pod is an ultra-lightweight, electric, unmanned vehicle. 21 pods connect Heathrow’s business car park with Terminal 5 via 3.8 kilometers of guideway. Each pod weighs just 850 kilograms and offer’s a completely new, fast, efficient form of public transport for the future. Using small driverless electric vehicles that run on guideways, the lightweight and flexible nature of the system enables it to be retrofitted into a broad range of environments and provide transportation that is environmentally friendly and operationally efficient. TRB Solution •TRB Lightweight Structures assisted ARRK in the cad design for the pod chassis and floor and advised ARRK on the calculations needed to produce a model that would meet the FEA analysis criteria. •TRB Lightweight Structures produced the chassis and floor from aluminium honeycomb sandwich panels resulting in a lightweight, high-strength structure. The PRT pods are a new type of transportation technology. They are small, lightweight, driverless electric vehicles, which run on special-purpose guideways. The chassis and floor are manufactured using lightweight materials that minimize the weight of the pod while maintaining the required strength to weight ratio of the overall structure."
