Improvements to the SCADA and PLC applications at Aberthaw Power Station in South Wales were welcomed by the control technicians. The system is for the Regenesys Technologies project and consists of two Wonderware Intouch SCADA PC's communicating with an Allen Bradley SLC500 and PLC5 processor. Bubble Automation were given the task of re-writing the SCADA and PLC applications. The existing system needed streamlining with a more intuitive and user friendly front end. The work involved redesigning the SCADA screens and interconnecting PLC logic working closely with the Regenesys scientists, technicians and plant personnel. The Regenesys flow battery works by storing or releasing electrical energy by means of a reversible electrochemical reaction between two salt solution electrolytes. The electrolytes are pumped through hundreds of individual cells, which are separated by a membrane. The electrolytes are stored in 700,000-gallon tanks, the concentrated solutions are sodium bromide and sodium polysulphide.
