You may think that your business’ role in combating environmental breakdown is of little significance. However, your customers – as well as sustainability experts throughout the world – would see things differently. Consumers are changing their buying habits on a global scale, and businesses must offer more sustainable products to remain commercially viable. Fortunately, Cambrian Packaging is working with companies nationwide to make this ambition a reality.
Sustainability: in the corporate world, it’s one of the hottest topics of the moment. And, with recent consumer figures and market trends, it’s not hard to see why. Findings from 2021’s EM Consumer Research Survey suggest that:
36% of UK consumers are often or always choosing brands with strong sustainability credentials;
44% regularly choose products including recycled or compostable packaging; and
76% of consumers believe that businesses have the most important role to play in impacting environmental sustainability.
The figures don’t end there. Rather, they suggest that this change in consumer habits has only just begun. Indeed, research from Deloitte highlights an increased consumer appetite for brands with a strong reputation around environmental sustainability, as well as companies with net zero commitments and pledges on greenhouse gas production.
So: what does this mean for the average British company – particularly those who rely on plastic packaging? How can these companies take steps towards becoming more environmentally sustainable in a market traditionally seen as problematic in the story of pollution? We answer these questions and more in the next section of our blog – keep reading to learn more!
Meet Your Sustainability Targets with Cambrian Packaging
With consumer trends heading along a more sustainable trajectory, businesses which adapt sooner rather than later will be in a more advantageous position to capitalise on this. Aside from the obvious commercial benefits, these early adopters can also assert themselves as a leader in this area: a brand that’s not afraid to take bold yet positive steps towards true circularity.
There’s lots of ways companies can adopt a comprehensive sustainability plan, and typical points in these plans include suggestions like adopting remote working; using electric vehicles, composting and embracing more energy-efficient processes. Whilst we couldn’t recommend these steps enough, we feel that efforts around packaging are perhaps the most significant. After all, our choice of packaging affects sustainability across several of its key touchpoints:
Waste reduction: Whether your products are recyclable or not will largely determine the level of waste your company (and by extension, your customers) will dispose of. By investing in recyclability, you can ensure that your business’ contribution to landfill is minimal.
Achieving environmental accreditation: Just saying that your company is sustainable isn’t enough to build real trust with your customers, and rightly so. Consumers respect real, verifiable environmental accreditation, and your choice of packaging and materials will ultimately contribute to this.
Using sustainable suppliers: Being sustainable isn’t just about examining your own products and processes. It’s also about the relationships and partnerships your company has with like minded businesses – including your packaging supplier. By working with a sustainable supplier, you’re one step closer to meeting your sustainability targets.
Using sustainable products and packaging: This is a key element of virtually any sustainability plan. By making some simple changes to your packaging and production process, you can swap out environmental hazards for solutions that are less impactful on the world around us.
Reduce, reuse, recycle: Few phrases are as recognisable as that decades-old mantra, ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. The fact, however, is that your ability to live this mantra will depend on the recyclability and circularity of your products and their packaging. By adopting recyclable packaging, you can truly fulfil this objective.
There are many paths towards sustainability, with many requiring varying degrees of investment and organisational effort. However, the fact is that your choice of packaging is one of the most simple and cost-effective changes you can make. Where sustainable packaging is on the agenda, we’re here to help.
