Medical - saving and prolonging life
Carrs have been laser welding surgical instruments and orthopaedic implants for nearly ten years.
Titanium and high grade stainless steel is better welded by laser than by conventional means; as the heat input is so much lower high value components are not distorted and the essential properties of the material are retained. In such sensitive applications, why compromise the excellent corrosion resistance of 17-4 grade stainless steel with a low quality weld? Precision welding and cleanliness are imperatives for us in this sector, coupled with 100% inspection and a nil failure record which contribute to better patient outcomes and reduced costs.
Case 1 - Beat the bug traps
Surgical instruments have traditionally been made from solid forgings or a machined single billet of material but these processes are exceedingly wasteful. Most instruments are now made from fabrications of smaller machined parts welded together. No join line can be left as a bug trap to harbour disease or germs, and laser welding is ideal to seal every joint clinically shut. Carrs are a trusted supplier to many instrument makers.
Case 2 - Implants with magnets
Rare earth magnets employed to resist corrosion are encapsulated near the surface of implants, under a thin stainless steel lid. The heat from the welding operation must be minimal to protect the magnetic properties and for the lid not to distort. Carrs have considerable experience and expertise in this developing field.
