Collecting dust – are vacuum cleaners fit for purpose?
In a move triggered by consumers, BBC Watchdog engaged the services of a leading product testing laboratory to test and compare the cleaning performance of three leading makes of vacuum cleaner. Although all claiming to do the same job, two out of the three appliances when tested to the recognised technical standard for assessing dry vacuum cleaners did not meet the required level of dust pick-up according to BS EN60312-1. In a report which went live on TV, BBC1 in March this year, Cranage EMC & Safety backed-up consumer findings with laboratory measurements using dust particles scientifically prepared and weighed under controlled environmental conditions. “We seem to be leading the way as an independent authority on the subject of electrical appliance performance testing” says Operations Director, Jon Jones, “and although in this instance there isn’t a safety issue, it does demonstrate the value of having tests performed by a third party accredited testing laboratory”. Our colleague Jon Jones is a member of BSI technical committee CPL/061/10 for floor treatment machines and the tests carried out under his direction related to dust pick-up performance on hardwood and carpet surfaces.
