Brushless impact drivers are a highly versatile, powerful and useful addition to anyone’s toolkit. Whether you work in construction or want a useful, relatively small tool that packs a punch for your DIY tasks at home – they are a must-have. This article explains why that is the case as well as how to use them.
What Is A Brushless Impact Driver?
As the name suggests, these tools drive a bit which provides the rotational force. But, they also have added impact force via a hammer and anvil component.
Sometimes impact drivers are known as impact drills as most of them can drill holes as well as drive in or remove screws. They have a high torque making them perfect for use with long, wide fasteners and hard materials.
Brushless varieties of this tool use less power and so extend both battery life and the life of the tool itself. They are also a relatively lightweight and small impact driver compared to a brushed impact driver.
What Can You Do With A Brushless Impact Driver?
A brushless impact driver is a very versatile tool. It can drive in most fasteners including screws and lag bolts. They are especially good for long wide fasteners and materials such as masonry, concrete and hardwoods. Some impact drivers can also be used to drill holes.
Brushless drivers are relatively lightweight and small enough to get into hard-to-reach places. Due to the high levels of force and vibration these high-power, high-torque tools are not suitable for smaller screws or more delicate applications.
Parts Of An Impact Driver
- Battery pack – cordless impact drivers have a removable and rechargeable battery pack.
- Collet – this grips the bits as opposed to a chuck in a regular driver or drill.
- Hammer and anvil – these provide the impact that combines with the rotation to drive fasteners quickly and into harder materials than a regular driver. Most impact drivers have two types of hammer and anvil, some even have three.
- Trigger – controls the speed.
- LED lights – for better visibility.
- Motor – converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy to power the hammer and anvil and the rotation of the bit.
- Directional switch – one position will drive the fastener in, and the other position will reverse it to remove screws.
How To Use A Brushless Impact Driver
- Charge the battery and while it is charging read the manual (don’t skip this step even if you have used impact drivers before, every model is slightly different).
- Put on your PPE (personal protective equipment) this should include gloves, dust mask and safety glasses. At this point also tie back long hair and ensure your clothing isn’t loose enough to get in the way.
- Select the right bit for the job, if you are unsure then compare the bits to the screw/bolt etc you are using.
- Insert the bit into the collet.
- Slide in the battery.
- Familiarise yourself with the settings before you get to the task in hand, try it in both directions.
- Put the impact driver in positive, hold it comfortably tight and pull the trigger.
- Once the job is done remove and charge the battery, remove and carefully store the bit, and dust off your impact driver before putting it away. You’ll be grateful you did this the next time you want to use it!
