How To Choose The Right Portable Generator For Camping

Perhaps it’s the stresses of modern life, or perhaps it is the fallout from repeated lockdowns during the pandemic but more of us than ever before are looking to get out into the great outdoors and go camping.

Whether you are a newbie camper who is looking to buy a camping generator, whether you are a camping veteran who has decided to either ditch the kind of campsites that have electric hookups for a wilder adventure or whether you’ve decided it’s time to add a bit more luxury to fantastic camping trips with the addition of a few mod cons by way of a portable camping generator, this is the article for you.

Know Your Usage

The type and size of portable camping generator that you choose to buy will depend upon your usage. The following points will help you to work out what is likely to be.

Appliances & Tools

First and foremost, list all the appliances and tools you will want to power using your portable generator. Then, check their wattage including for startup (as this is often higher). Add up those you might want to use at the same time. This will help you determine the size generator to suit your needs.

Caravan

Commonly caravans will need an amp connection of between 16-50amps. Check the connections on portable generators for a caravan-ready outlet for your convenience.

Power Output

Choosing a generator with a higher output than your minimum requirements will help to avoid overloading your generator, which is the most common cause of generator failure.

Weight & Size

Getting the right balance between a large enough fuel tank to run for as long as you need it and a lightweight generator is key. Think about how many hours you expect your generator to run and go from there.

Fuel

Fuel options for portable generators include diesel, petrol and propane. Most commonly people will choose diesel. But you can find out more about whether a diesel or petrol generator is the best option for you here

Noise Level

Many campsites have regulations regarding the noise output of generators, so it’s wise to check individual campsite rules before you travel. Even if this doesn’t apply, you will still want to consider and check the noise level of your generator before you buy. After all, you, your family and both human and wildlife neighbours don’t want to be disturbed by a noisy generator. There are plenty of silent generators to choose from.  Inverter generators are usually quieter.

Camping Generator FAQs

Can I use a portable generator on a campsite?

Generally speaking, yes. However, you will have to check the individual campsites’ rules.

Many campsites have rules about when you can use them such as not after 9 pm or before 7 am to avoid disturbing fellow campers, but even if they don’t, it’s good camping etiquette to switch them off overnight.

Where should you not put a portable generator?

Never put a portable generator in an enclosed space. Fumes can kill. For more tips and advice, see our guide on using a portable generator safely.
