Case Study: Aperol Spritz Jigger

CLIENT NAME: harr + bass
PROJECT: Aperol Jigger
QUANTITY PRODUCED: ~50,000 units

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE?

Our first challenge was developing a product that solved the need for a precise, easy-to-use jigger. After extensive work, we found the perfect solution. Next, we needed to ensure the design could be manufactured cost-effectively. After exploring various methods, injection moulding emerged as the best option. Having collaborated with several injection moulding companies, we trusted Great Central Plastics (GCP) as our plastic moulder for this bespoke drinks accessory. Initially, the jigger was moulded from GPPS, but as sustainability became crucial, we faced the challenge of evolving the product into a more eco-friendly product.

HOW DID GCP HELP OVERCOME YOUR CHALLENGES?

For the original jigger, GCP’s expertise in injection moulding was key to ensuring the product was designed for efficient manufacturing. They also developed a mould tool layout that balanced cost and longevity, making it ideal for the project’s scope.

When it came to creating a sustainable version of the Aperol Jigger, GCP’s experience as a sustainable injection moulder proved invaluable. They introduced LIMEX, a limestone-based material with a premium feel and strong sustainability credentials. Recently declared non-taxable and non-plastic under the Plastic Packaging Tax Policy, LIMEX was the perfect choice for this project.

Achieving the correct Aperol orange shade in LIMEX presented a new challenge, but GCP collaborated closely with the material’s supplier, LXD, to deliver the desired result. Additionally, GCP suggested incorporating the BDP ingredient to enhance biodegradability at the product’s end of life, further boosting its sustainability.

Beyond the product, the project became greener by working with GCP, a UK-based injection moulding company that utilises solar-powered energy and UK-made tooling. Combined with the use of LIMEX and BDP, this collaboration delivered significant eco-friendly benefits.
