A decade of driving efficiency and growth at JC Metalworks: Celebrating Philip’s journey

JC Metalworks is proud to celebrate a significant milestone – Philip, our esteemed Financial Controller, has completed a remarkable 10 years with the company. This interview delves into Philip’s journey and the transformative impact he’s had on our organisation.

From manual processes to streamlined efficiency

In 2014, Philip joined JC Metalworks and discovered that the company was heavily reliant on time-consuming manual systems. He has played a pivotal role in implementing new systems such as PeopleHR, MIE Pro, and Workbooks CRM, which have saved us significant amounts of time and resources and made us more efficient and effective.

Implementation of PeopleHR

In response to the need for a more efficient and centralised HR system, Philip assisted in implementing PeopleHR at JC Metalworks. This system automated previously manual processes such as holiday requests, absences, sick leave requests, and record-keeping, streamlining workflows and improving communication. Through PeopleHR, employees at JC Metalworks now have self-service access to important documents like company policies and handbooks. The system also sends monthly business updates to keep everyone informed, ensuring transparency and fostering a culture of ownership over HR information. Philip mentioned that in the near future, we’re exploring integrating clock-in systems with PeopleHR to further streamline operations and avoid duplication of work.

The ERP system: A catalyst for growth

Philip’s most significant achievement is the successful implementation of our new ERP system. Thanks to Philip’s efforts, we have moved away from using spreadsheets for inventory management. The new system offers real-time insights into project timelines, greatly improving our project management capabilities.

The MIE system implementation was a team effort. Philip gathered a team, including Mehdi, Theo, and Gary, to analyse and optimise existing processes, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system. They faced various challenges, with material testing being the most difficult. Ultimately all customer and supplier records were successfully migrated to the new system. Extensive training ensured that users were familiar with the system, leading to quicker access to information and more efficient project management. The MIE system has transformed our stock tracking processes, promoting greater efficiency and reliability.

Furthermore, computer screens and systems have been installed on the shop floor, which has fostered seamless project management and goal achievement.

Workbooks: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Implementation

Philip conducted thorough research, evaluating various options before selecting Workbooks as the perfect fit for JC Metalworks. Following a successful implementation with comprehensive training, the system is now up and running smoothly. Workbooks provide us with valuable dashboards, offering real-time insights into our sales and marketing activities. This knowledge empowers us to make informed decisions and optimise our strategies for continued success.

Empowered employees, compliant operations

Philip takes immense pride in ensuring all employees have access to the information they need. He ensures that all employees adhere to company policies and procedures, and also makes sure that JC Metalworks as a business is compliant with GDPR.

Optimising for Success: A Continuous Pursuit

Philip also oversees process optimisation. He constantly analyses operations to identify areas for improvement and ensures we’re achieving the right sales mix.

Financial stability: The bedrock of growth

Philip understands that a strong financial foundation is essential for JC Metalworks’ continued growth. He plays a critical role in ensuring our infrastructure supports our ambitious goals and is important in investment and growth-related decisions.

When it comes to work culture, Philip describes JC Metalworks as a true team environment. Everyone contributes their unique skills and experience to deliver exceptional products to our customers. His message is clear: work hard, celebrate successes, and strive for continuous improvement. This philosophy fosters a positive and friendly atmosphere, evident throughout the company.

 Best memories

Philip fondly remembers organising a charity walk up Mount Snowdon. He cherishes the entire experience, from the planning and training leading up to the event itself. The camaraderie, the challenge of the climb, and the satisfaction of raising money for a worthy cause (Rainbows) all combined to create a truly memorable experience for Philip.

Off the clock: Philip’s passions and pursuits

Outside of work, Philip enjoys an active lifestyle that includes walking and cycling. He has a passion for travel and exploring new cultures and destinations around the world. When at home, Philip cherishes spending quality time with his 10-year-old son, taking him to theme parks and creating lasting memories. A sports fan, Philip enjoys watching games and attending live music events. He’s a dedicated supporter of Liverpool Football Club and finds inspiration in the music of Coldplay.

Evolving role: Beyond finance

Philip’s journey has seen him evolve from a Management Accountant to a Financial Controller and, a key member of the senior management team. His role has become increasingly strategic, encompassing IT systems upgrades, HR administration, payroll, and company inductions.

Philip takes immense pride in JC Metalworks’ achievements. He beams about the company’s record-breaking sales month, a testament to the collective effort and resilience of the entire team. Looking back, he reflects with satisfaction on how JC Metalworks navigated the challenges of the past few years, emerging stronger and experiencing significant growth in the post-pandemic era. This period of overcoming obstacles and achieving success together is a source of great satisfaction for Philip.

A look ahead: Embracing the future

Philip’s vision for the future is one of continuous improvement and transparency. Plans include adding more shop floor screens for real-time progress updates and implementing even more calculated KPIs to optimise production. He wants to continuously evolve in the MIE pro systems and use it for planning and quality recording more efficiently.

Looking back over his 10 years at JC Metalworks, Philip feels a deep sense of pride in his accomplishments. He has witnessed the company weather challenging times and emerge even more resilient. The company’s current state of efficiency and preparedness is a testament to Philip’s unwavering dedication and tireless efforts.

Last week we gathered to acknowledge his decade-long services to JC Metalworks, presenting him with a memento  Jason, Managing Director of JC Metalworks, gave a heartfelt speech. He expressed his deepest gratitude for Philip’s ten years of dedication, emphasising the critical importance of having someone completely trustworthy with the company’s finances. Jason applauded Philip’s reliability, stating that Philip’s meticulous work allows him to make confident decisions with the assurance of accurate information. He declared Philip a key member of the team, and further hailed Philip as the “champion of our value – Trust and Reliability.” He concluded by acknowledging Philip’s impressive career progression within the company, encompassing IT, HR, finance and his role in strategic SMT. Jason also recognised Philip’s invaluable role as a mentor, consistently helping his team develop and providing them with opportunities to succeed.
