Our designer, Kate, top tips for this Season
11-06-2017
Kate joined us in November 2015 and immediately set to work designing our current Spring Summer 2017 collection. Her transition to Nomads was flawless because her main inspirations are travel and culture which fits our ethos perfectly.
Here at Nomads we truly love what we do and who we work with, so we like to keep you up to date with our progress. I asked Kate to talk us through her design process and how she starts her new beautiful collections.
“When I start working on a new season, I start with fabric and trend research. Although I’m not overly trend focussed, it is always good to see the new colours and shapes coming through and edit out what is relevant to the Nomads brand and new collection. I start by putting together mood boards of colour stories and overall looks I would like to achieve. Next I work on sketching up the shapes for the collection and doing the technical specs to send out to factories. A few weeks later, the first samples arrive and we can start fitting these on models, ready for the second samples which need to be ready in time for the trade shows and finally the seasons collection is ready for our wonderful customers”
Now that the Summer sunshine has arrived, and the collection has been available a short while, I decided to chat to Kate about her range. I started by asking Kate which is her favourite piece from her range and why. Kate’s favourite piece is the HQ43 shirt because of the the handloom fabric. She loves that it is a traditional craft and supports Indian craftspeople. Kate adores the pretty hand-made tassel detail. She finds it super easy to wear and styles it with her jeans when she’s feeling indecisive. Kate is also loving the printed jersey tunic dresses and the double layer vest worn with our printed trousers.
I went on to ask Kate which pieces are top wardrobe essentials from her collection and why.
“The first top wardrobe essential for this season is the ladder-lace detail T-shirt (PY44). It is available in four fresh colours and whilst it is an easy every day item it has enough detail to feel unusual and special. They really work well with our printed trousers and scarves. Another key wardrobe essential is our woven slub trousers (CN15) This is a new shape for us this season and is a slim leg trouser, which works especially well with tunic tops and shirts as it gives a slim silhouette.”
I also quizzed Kate on which will be her ‘go to’ piece this summer when she struggling with what to wear that day. Our handloom tunic dress in Dove Grey is going to be a key piece for Kate this summer (HQ24). Kate says that you can just throw it on and it looks great – especially dressed up with the Boho Betty jewellery that we have this season. An easy to put together outfit that looks modern. As soon as the weather gets warm enough she will be wearing this with our new sandals too.
Kate’s preferred dress for a special Summer occasion, for example, a wedding, festival, garden party, BBQ etc. is the Linear Lotus print dress (LN28) This is because it’s a fit and flare shape which makes it incredibly flattering. It is also a sophisticated length and the beautiful print is exclusive to us at Nomads. Kate says a pair of wedge sandals would finish off this outfit perfectly.
Finally, I asked Kate what we should keep an eye out for when shopping her collection
“Spring Summer 17 sees lots of new contemporary shapes alongside key existing best sellers. We have an exciting range of exquisite prints in fresh new colour palettes, and I have added in more handloom fabrics and more textural knitwear in organic cotton. The pieces are versatile and lots of different looks can be co-ordinated from each group. There is also a new range of bags, scarves and sandals to help complete your Summer look”
