The Power of Citrus
Why Citrus?
You may be wondering why we've decided to write a blog post about Citrus Fruits. Well, since the start of Veganuary, we've been experimenting with different vegan recipes - quickly finding out how vital citrus fruits can be for enhancing flavours and adding much-needed vitamins. We decided to do a bit of research on our beloved citrus fruits and why they are so good for us. (Plus their vibrant colours always look good and give constant colour inspo).
Brain nourishing facts
Most modern citrus species originated in Asia from Mandarins, Citrons (Lemons) and Pomelos.
Citrus fruits that are grown in tropical climates without a proper winter will stay green on the outside. That’s because citrus fruit needs to get cold to turn orange or yellow.
All citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C and Potassium, but pink & red citrus fruits have extra antioxidants to help improve general health.
Oranges
Orange juice is the most popular fruit juice in the world.
One orange gives you all the vitamin C you need for a whole day.
The flowers of an orange tree are white and have a wonderful smell, so they are used in making perfumes.
Lemons
The lemon is an evergreen, which means it produces fruit all year round.
You can make a battery by attaching electrodes to a lemon. Several lemon batteries can power a small digital watch. To power a flashlight bulb, you’d need 500 lemons.
Drinking lemon water in the morning: calms the digestive system and improves skin health.
