OKW has introduced a new LED backlighting machining service as part of its enclosure customisation offering, giving electronics designers an elegant solution to a common challenge: integrating LEDs or light pipes into a front panel without compromising ingress protection.
This innovative service allows designers to add discreet, eye-catching illumination to devices without affecting the enclosure’s designated IP rating. It is especially suited to applications where protection against dust and water ingress is essential.
The backlighting provides a soft, subtle glow. Characters—such as numbers or letters—only become visible when illuminated. When the lighting is off, they disappear entirely. No visible LEDs or light pipes disrupt the enclosure’s appearance, as all components are mounted beneath the surface of the panel.
To achieve this effect, OKW precisely machines small indentations into the underside of the panel. LEDs can then be fitted beneath these indentations according to the customer’s specifications. The indentations are carefully engineered to be thin enough to allow light through, yet invisible when not in use.
This backlighting feature is ideal for OKW’s SMART-PANEL enclosures, which are designed for wall-mounted applications in sectors such as smart homes, building control, IoT/IIoT, healthcare, laboratories, and security technology.
The new LED backlighting option complements OKW’s wide range of customisation services, which include CNC machining, printing, laser marking, decorative foils, EMC shielding, and assembly of accessories. Customers can also specify special materials and lacquering to further tailor their enclosures.
