Can I Help You?

Can I Help You?

When you think about the way people use the internet, it is plain to see that many are looking for answers, a solution to a problem they have. Some people know who can help them, so search for say local plumbers, but others (and they are in the majority) search for ‘how can I fix a leaking tap?’, or ‘what sealant should I use around a bath?’.

As a business owner are you in reality, actually running a sort of HELP DESK?

I think so. People have problems they need to solve and you could be the one to solve them

This fact is often overlooked by businesses, they don’t answer the question ‘How can I help you?’ but instead list their services in a basic way. This means that when people search for the answer to a question, that they rarely come up and thus miss the chance of making  ’first contact’ with a potential customer.

There is proof that this works, you only have to look at @Marcus Sheridan (see his book ‘They Ask You Answer’ for the full story) and how he turned his swimming pool business around in 2008 for proof.

You may even be able to prove it for yourself, as if you write lots of blogs or publish lots of helpful articles on your site, your Google Search Console data will no doubt show you just how many people you have made contact with, something that would not have happened if you did not write that content…

Now in order for this to work, your articles are going to have to be long enough and detailed enough to catch the eye of Google and the other Search engines (including the new batch of AI ones).

This is often where I meet the first line of resistance when talking to my customers about how they can improve their SEO.

‘People don’t read lots of text they say’, it will just put them off.

REALLY? There is no doubt that someone who is not interested in finding an answer to their problem will not read your text, but are you actually interested in that type of visitor?

Remember those that have an Intent  / Issue that they need solve WILL read on and if you can prove that you have an answer and CAN HELP THEM there is a good chance that they will contact you.

But there is more to it than just writing interesting and helpful content. It has to be displayed in manner that does not look like a wall of text, the clever use of images and white space being required.

Then there is the matter of SOCIAL PROOF and Case Studies.

It is VITAL that social proof is displayed alongside your text, this to prove that you have helped others, whilst case studies will give the level of detail that some will require.

But there is still more in my view. After all, you want Conversions, you want people who read your copy to take it to the next level, that of actually contacting you.

So how do you do this?

In my view you need a strong Call To Action on your ‘helpful’ content pages, something possibly as simple as a big button saying ‘See How We Can Help You’.

This would take the visitor to a page that ‘establishes your credentials.’

Here a video would be best, perhaps a talking head, showing you understand their issues and have the knowledge and experience to help them. You could even have different pages covering different ways you can help, a plumber having a page about finding and fixing leaks, whilst another one would talk about bathroom design and so on.

I know of some great  conversion experts about well as Marketing experts who can help tune the marketing and conversion rates, but the first stage is to get the visitor to the site, and here, it will be content that does the job.

So just remember that more people are looking for answers to questions than the people who provide the services or products that answer their needs…

So get writing, you know it makes sense…
