TFL wins power station assembly, welding and installation
Tubular Fabrications Ltd (TFL) has been awarded a contract to assemble and weld components for the bag filter plant at the new Eon power station in Blackburn Meadows, Sheffield. The work involves the shop assembly and welding of six hoppers, transportation to the site and assisting Eon’s engineers in the assembly and welding of the entire filter housing. Weighing 5.2 tonnes each, the two plenum filter heads measure approximately 15 metres in length, while the three gas flap dampers are almost four metres long. The sub-assembled fabrications were manufactured in Austria and shipped to TLF’s facility in Ecclesfield for final assembly and welding. All the fabrications are constructed from grade S275 carbon steel and will be welded using the GMAW process before transportation to Blackburn Meadows for installation. Upon completion, each casing will be approximately 15 metres long, 7.3 metres high and 5.2 metres wide, and will weigh around 30 tonnes. TFL’s managing director Paul Rodgers said: “Our turnkey service is very convenient to our clients, because we’re able to follow it through all the way and deliver it on time, with no nasty surprises. “My engineers are able to handle both shop work and on-site installations. They’re qualified to BS EN ISO 15614 and BS EN 287 and have Passport to Safety, IPAF and plenty of other supplementary training including confined space, working at heights and abrasive wheels. They’re a definite asset to a project like this.” Blackburn Meadows power station is a renewable (biomass) energy plant running on wood chip and similar products.
