Looking at the different types of sounds

Industrial silencers aren’t something you see every day. In fact, you probably won’t even know they are there. If you work in a noisy environment though, you’ll be glad to have them around. Their job is to lower the noise level, ensuring it is less harmful. Ventx can provide solutions for all kinds of situations. There are even silencers for a noisy gas vent if you have one.

The crucial thing to remember is loud noises damage our ears because they affect the tiny, delicate hair cells within. Noise can easily result in permanent hearing loss, sometimes with just one very loud sound. To understand the risk, it is a good idea to ensure you know the different types of sounds and the respective decibel levels. They can also show when you need solutions like silencers or PPE.

Painful sounds

Firstly, there are painful sounds. If the decibels range from 120 to 140 dB, the noise can cause pain. The sounds here are as forceful and high-pitched as a gunshot, fireworks, jet engine, or police siren. Exposing yourself to these noises can result in hearing loss, so it is vital to use silencers and/or PPE.

Extremely loud sounds

Secondly, we have extremely loud sounds. These range from 90 to 110 dB. Warehouses using power tools, airplane hangers, and industrial plants are common locales with extremely loud noises. Any sound over 85 dB can cause damage to hearing, especially with repeat exposure, so silencers and PPE are important.

Very loud sounds

Next is very loud sounds. Vacuum cleaners, alarm clocks, and traffic all create noises between 70 to 80 dB. A gas vent could generate this level of noise or more, depending on the operating conditions.

Moderate sounds

Next we have noises that are safer to hear, but can still be disruptive. The average TV for instance is able to generate roughly 70 dB. As for a normal speaking conversation, it can produce 60 dB of sound. At these levels, you won’t need professional hearing protection. For the easily distracted or sound sensitive though, earplugs could be beneficial.

Faint sounds

On the faintest side of things, sounds such as whispers and rustling leaves create around 30 to 50 dB of noise. A quiet room in a library tends to be about 40 dB. These are the safest and most peaceful environments for our hearing.
