About Us
West Yorkshire Steel are specialist steel stockholders and supplier, providing much needed high quality steel grades for a dizzying number of purposes. It was founded in 1975, when it became apparent that Britain was in need of some very particular steel types, yet not only were the grades in short supply, but so was the knowledge needed to get the right steel for the job.
The fascinating thing about steel is how each grade has its own characteristics that makes it uniquely positioned to do the job; oil and gas drilling require high quality, certified steel grades that can withstand impact from heavy rocks as well as corrosive marine environments. Pharmaceutical uses need stainless varieties that promote hygiene and transport and aeronautical firms need certified grades produced to within very tight tolerances - no matter what the usage. our knowledge of specialist steel grades means we understand exactly what the customer requires.
The right tool for the job
People often only think of steel in large construction projects, but we supply just as much to toolmakers and precision engineering. Special steel components are at the heart of most metal products, everything from cars to home appliances, which themselves are estimated to be about 70 per cent stop stainless varieties raised hospital hygiene and allowed the invention of the surgical scalpel and even the internet realm of binary 1s and 0s is built on a huge steel network infrastructure.
The vast array of steel specifications reflects the fact that each one has its own unique characteristics, defined by its chemical composition, mechanical properties and hardening capabilities.
Adjusting elements such as carbon, nickel and molybdenum or altering the temperatures during heat treatment can make a final steel that's hard or tough, corrosion resistant or able to withstand high temperatures.
We take pride in providing the highest levels of knowledge and service, being able to identify the right grade for your particular needs, whether you're creating high speed drills or high speed cars.
Customers of all sizes
We've been providing steel to toolmakers and engineers for over 40 years, so have a good knowledge of what manufacturers and engineers require.
One thing that surprises many is the range of customers we have. As well as major engineering and manufacturing plants, there are universities that need a range of grades for different educational uses. We even supply to artists, for everything from largescale installations to the statues adorning town and city centres. We have one-person engineers and even specialist restorers using our steel to repair and revive things like classic cars and steam locomotives.
Although each customer has different requirements, different uses and different setup, the one constant we have to deliver to everyone is the quality and service that makes West Yorkshire Steel what it is.
Transparency and sharing knowledge
We fully understand that while we find steel fascinating, not everyone has the time to become an expert.
The World Steel Association states there are approximately 3,500 steel grades, but we think once you include physical, chemical and environmental factors, this estimate is quite conservative.
As part of our commitment to customer service, our website has over 200 data sheets and a glossary available, to help people make the right decision.
Practical, straightforward information means we can be completely transparent about our processes and customers can be confident in buying the right material, without simply having to take anybody else's word for it.
In regards to our processes, we've also repeatedly been awarded ISO:
status, which represents our commitment to quality and service to all.
We take this very serious as part of our offering to our customers, ensure they receive a top quality product and can have confidence in their orders every single time.
Our history
Although the company began with a small supply, cut oy bandsaw in a garage workshop, we've flourished into a supplier or almost any type whether it's stainless, engineering or tool steel.
Our range covers flat and round bar, plate or sheet and any number of non-standard grades to meet specific customer requirements. One thing that became clear was that some 'niche' or specialist steel grades were just unknown in Britain, so the expertise to their usage was lacking.
One constant over the years is our ability to share our knowledge and expertise to give the customer what’s needed, which we believe has fuelled our growth.
Seeing as we began just after the creation of the metropolitan count. of West Yorkshire, we chose West Yorkshire Steel as a name to represent the incredible amount of history and knowledge of steel in the area, but also to show modern thinking, with an eye on the future.
The future
Modern steel is constantly evolving, and is just as much about laboratories as it is about steel mills and forges. While steel is thought of as large industrial, the constant advancement has created a very exciting future for it.
When you consider that steel is 100 per cent recyclable, allowing old materials to be reused over and over instead of being discarded, steel becomes more appealing for sustainability.
Coupled with advancements in energy efficiency, process and cleaner production methods, and steel's reliability as a material puts it front and centre of how we live.
The future for us at West Yorkshire Steel is just as long-lasting as the steel. We're committed to expanding our knowledge and expertise in line with all the advancements in the sector, and continue to share our fascination with others and make them as excited as we are about steel.
Most of all, we're committed to keeping the same excellent service that our customers expect and rev on We pride ourselves on being a local employer, investing in our community and the people, which has given a real family feel to the business. This means we don't just see our staff as part of the family, but also our customers, who are always real people to us and never just a sum at the bottom of an invoice
