About Us
Foundations Archaeology was founded in 1995, part of the 'new wave' of independant contract archaeology units, which came into being after the introduction of Planning Policy Guidance note 16 in 1991. The new legislation opened up the market for independant units to work alongside, and often, replace the former system of Museum and County Council based units.
A successful two years saw the incorporation of the business as a Limited Company in October 1997 as Archaeological Management Services Ltd, although the company continues to trade as Foundations Archaeology. Today archaeology remains very much a part of the planning process in the UK. Planning Policy Statement 5 (England), Welsh Office Circular 60/96 (Wales), and National Planning Guideline 5 (Scotland) have resulted in any development proposal being assessed on its archaeological potential and our input to this market comprises 100% of our business.
Over the last fifteen years the company has since gone from strength-to-strength and now has a nationwide reputation for consistent rapid, high-quality and cost-effective work. If an archaeological dimension is identified by planning officers, a reputable, professional organisation, aware of commercial constraints and with a high level of business acumen, must be found to assess, advise and, if necessary, carry out any additional works required.
Foundations can manage the heritage matters affecting your development; no matter its size or nature, or whether greenfield or brownfield. During this period Foundations Archaeology has built up a client base which includes many large and prestigious companies as well as small firms and private developers including homeowners wishing to build extensions to their property. Foundations Archaeology is committed to the highest level of quality standards and has been certified to BS/EN/ISO 9001:2008 for quality assurance in the provision of archaeological services since 2003, one of the first and few archaeological practices to be independantly certified for quality standards (See our Quality Policy Statement).
As part of our commitment to high standards and excellence in quality Foundations is a Registered Organisation with the Institute for Archaeologists and works to the Institutes Standards and Guidance, as well as complying with its Codes of Conduct and Practice. We produce reliable results within agreed deadlines and tailor our contributions to meet your real needs.
