This example is a bespoke mobile advertising system for use on Taxicabs. The unit is designed for customers that require an outdoor, high bright and mobile advertising solution based on IoT technologies for control and monitoring.
Design Goals
The customer was looking for a robust advertising solution with two large high bright screens to be mounted on London Black Taxi Cabs. The system needed to operate outdoors in all weather and lighting conditions. Our brief was to create a system that could display still and moving images on two screens and be updated and monitored remotely. Other requirements were, GPS location information so the system could change what was advertised depending on location and monitoring/remote system updates. The system required custom metalwork, an embedded PC system with two large letterbox format LCD displays.
Initial prototype designs were created using Solidworks, various designs were discussed to get the design right.
There were considerable technical challenges for this project, including dealing with vibration, heat removal, reliable operation, constant communication, and mechanical mounting. Several prototypes were built and tested to get the ideal combination of cost, weight and function. Many sensors and technologies were built into the unit. These technologies included GPS for precise location tracking and location-based advertising. 5G radio communications to enable over-the-air updates of the OS and advertising materials as well as system performance tracking and diagnostics. Temperature and vibration sensors were installed to monitor system performance and enable ideal operating conditions.

Once the hardware was completed, RDS helped design and build the software platform on both the unit itself and the management system so that the Taxi Pod could be easily monitored in real time or updated when needed. RDS also has the SensConnect platform, which is a hardware and software combination designed to enable the interfacing and control of hardware systems in remote locations.

The customer was delighted with the prototype, production systems were commissioned in batches of 10 units manufactured at our custom-made facility in Westerham.

The system is now in full use around London providing live advertising depending on location, with constant feedback of position and adverts run.
